During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Sustainable Development Forum, Russia put forward a concrete institutional initiative to use the SCO Sustainable Development Council as a platform for drafting a new post-2030 global development agenda.
“The Council, operating within the SCO Think Tank Consortium, is designed to serve as a platform for continuous expert collaboration,” recalled Boris Titov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals. “Collaborative efforts to analyze current and future initiatives have already begun, and we encourage all interested representatives from SCO member states and partner organizations to actively engage in this process.”
In the final communiqué, participants of the Forum agreed to intensify the efforts of the SCO Sustainable Development Council as a key platform for continuous dialogue, the creation of coordinated approaches, and the sharing of best practices. It is anticipated that this platform will enable experts and official representatives from SCO member countries to collaboratively draft a new global agenda for the post-2030 period. This agenda will encompass a set of goals and objectives for the next phase of sustainable development, along with implementation mechanisms ranging from financial tools to monitoring systems.
“The document is intended to be presented for discussion by the entire global community. Essentially, the SCO is preparing a collective contribution to the UN’s efforts in establishing a new global development roadmap,” explained Boris Titov. “By the time international discussions officially launch on the next phase of sustainable development goals, the SCO will have already compiled consolidated ideas and proposals, inviting participation from all interested nations.”
The Forum is organized by Boris Titov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals, together with the SCO Secretariat, supported by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, and with the Roscongress Foundation acting as the operator.
The primary aim of the Forum is to address the current status of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) program both globally and within SCO countries, explore its new phase after 2030, discuss the SCO’s role in shaping a new global development architecture, share best ESG practices in the SCO region, and examine prospects for collaborative projects and initiatives in sustainable development.
