Moscow to host Russia–Myanmar Business Forum

The Russia–Myanmar Business Forum will take place at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics on 19 August as part of the visit of President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing to the Russian Federation. The Forum will bring together representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, as well as members of the business and expert circles of Russia and Myanmar. The programme will be opened by President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maxim Reshetnikov, and Rector of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics Ivan Lobanov. The event has been organized by the Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in the Russian Federation and the Roscongress Foundation.

Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maxim Reshetnikov emphasized that cooperation between the two countries gives Myanmar access to essential resources, goods and services, creates jobs, and increases the tourist flow to the country. In turn, Russia gains new markets, investments and production.

“Russia and Myanmar have strengthened cooperation in various areas over the past few years: trade is diversifying; the payment infrastructure is actively developing, as demonstrated by the fact that several hotels and stores in Myanmar now accept Russian Mir cards; tour operators in the Republic frequently participate in Russian tourism exhibitions; and highly qualified blue-collar workers are arriving from Myanmar for employment. In addition, investment in project cooperation between Moscow and Naypyidaw is expanding, with the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Promotion and Protection of Investments coming into force. In this regard, holding a business forum will help identify new growth opportunities and strengthen dialogue between the business communities of Russia and Myanmar,” he noted.

Confirmed participants in the Forum include: Deputy Minister of National Planning, Investment and Foreign Economic Relations of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Thant Sin Lwin; Deputy Minister of Commerce of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Min; President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) Aye Win; Chief Executive Officer of Myanmar Airways International (MAI) Tanes Kumar; as well as representatives of the Russian and Myanmar business communities.

Key topics of the business forum include the investment potential of Russia–Myanmar relations and doing business in Myanmar, the prospects for the development of the country’s tourism industry, opportunities for expanding mutual trade, and new products and solutions for the markets of both countries.
