The SCO Sustainable Development Forum will take place in Moscow on 17 November on the sidelines of the Meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government. The Forum will be held in the format of a large roundtable and will be attended by representatives of delegations from SCO countries, government agencies, the business community, as well as sustainable development experts from the SCO and partner countries. The event is being organized by Special Representative of the Russian President for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and SCO Secretariat Boris Titov with the support of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development. The Roscongress Foundation is managing the Forum.
The main purpose of the Forum is to discuss the current state of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) programme and the prospects for the UN SDGs agenda after 2030 in the face of new global challenges. The participants will focus on partnerships and specific projects of SCO countries, the organization’s sustainable development priorities, and the creation of a permanent SCO Sustainable Development Council. During the discussions, they will consider the challenges and opportunities of the 2030 SDGs programme and the need to update and supplement individual goals, as well as adapt them to new global challenges such as digital risks (cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and robotization), demographic changes, and geopolitical fragmentation.
One of the main items on the Forum agenda is the creation of the SCO Sustainable Development Council. It will ensure regular coordination and the preparation of practical initiatives to strengthen cooperation related to sustainable development within the SCO. The participants will also examine the concept of the Council’s work, as well as its objectives, regulations, and anticipated results.
The Forum is meant to become a platform that can shape a unified strategy, come up with joint solutions for sustainable and balanced development, and ensure the progressive and long-term development of the economy, science, social sector, and ecology of SCO member states. It also aims to strengthen the international dialogue and mutual exchange of experience between countries and the expert community.
